Beanbag Boccia

Residents at Birdston Care Home have recently been introduced to beanbag Boccia. Boccia is a precision sport, similar to bowls. It became a Paralympic sport in 1984 and is now practised in over 50 countries around the world. Using beanbags, which are lighter than original Boccia balls. Taking part in the activity has empowered residents to support each other to engage in friendly competition.
Talking about the impact of the sport on their health and wellbeing, residents have described the activity as “lovely” and something that they “enjoy”. Birdston residents have weekly Boccia competitions which forges friendships and gives everyone a sense of inclusion as well as increasing physical mobility and enjoyment.
Activities Assistant Anthony said “Boccia is a key part of our activities programme here at Birdston. Not only is it good fun, but it gives participants a sense of inclusion and self-belief. We will continue to monitor the progress of our boccia competition and look at ways to progress games to benefits our residents.”
